The life of a log driver

Old time log drivers lived a hard and risky life, but it was also a free and flexible life. The comradeship between the log drivers was great, living together during the working week or longer periods, often in simple huts where the smell of wet clothes mixed with smoke from the open fire. The log drivers task was to ensure that timber and pulpwood, which was floated down streams and rivers, made it all the way down to it's final destination which was usually a sawmill or industry for pulp factory. It was not unusual for the timber to get stuck in major log jams that must be sorted by hand or dynamite.

Today this is a bygone era, but you can still feel the history and traditions as you build your own timber raft and drift down the river Klarälven. Then as now, you live close to nature, experiencing freedom, sorting out problems together and sometimes getting out of a tough fixes on your adventure.
