Food preparation

HUNGRY?

Cooking over an open fire is an exciting and perhaps challenging way to provide for oneself. Moreover, it’s the only option during your experience in Vildmarksbyn Eden.

There are several fire pits for cooking. You can fetch firewood and kindling from the woodshed.

If you want to boil water or something else, it’s best to have flames, meaning you add plenty of firewood. A lid keeps the heat within the pot, and the water boils faster. If you want to grill or fry, it’s better to have embers, so let the wood burn down first. Feel free to ask for tips if you’re unsure. We can show you how to start a fire.

Various grill grates are available to place over the fire, and basic kitchen equipment for cooking over an open fire is available. Equipment includes pots, wok pans, cast iron pots, or coffee pots for brewing coffee. Plates and utensils are provided. Bring your own food if you haven’t booked our food basket. All kitchen accessories are stored in the communal cabin, The Bear.

The water from the river is suitable for cooking. If you want to drink the water directly, you need to boil it in advance for at least three minutes. Alternatively, you can choose to bring fresh water from home.

Cooking over the fire with crackling flames is both soothing and a beautiful experience.

Washing up

After the meal, it’s time to wash up. Dish soap and bowls are available in the communal cabin, The Bear. You’ll find our washing-up area at the edge of the ravine; you fetch water from the river with a bucket, then heat it in large pots over the fire and wash in the dish basin.
