To prepare food over open fire is an exciting and sometimes challenging way to sustain yourself. But it is the only option during your stay in the Wilderness Village.
There are a number of fireplaces where you can prepare food, both under cover such as in the communal cabin, Björnen, and out in the open. You fetch wood and kindling from the woodshed.
If you wish to boil water or something else, it’s best to have flames – that is, feed the fire with wood. A lid will keep the heat in the saucepan and the water will boil more quickly. If you wish to grill or fry, it’s better to have glowing embers, that is allow the wood to burn down first. Please ask for tips advice if you are uncertain. We can show you how to get a fire going.
A number of barbecue grills are available to place on the fire and there is simple cooking equipment for use over open fire. The equipment includes, for example, saucepan, wok, iron pot and pot to make coffee in. Crockery and cutlery are also available, as well as spices and oil. Apart from this, you should bring all food with you if you have not booked the food package. All cooking equipment is kept in the communal cabin, Björnen.
Water from the river works well for cooking. If you wish to drink water direct from the river, you should boil it first for at least three minutes. You can also choose to bring your own drinking water with you.
To prepare food over a fire which spits and crackles is a soothing and wonderful experience.
Washing up
After the meal, it’s time to wash up. Washing up liquid and bowls can be found in the communal cabin, Björnen. You will find the washing up station at the edge of the ravine. You fetch water for washing up from the river in a bucket and heat it in a large pan over the fire before washing up at the station.
