The river\u2019s natural yearly rhythm, with changing water levels, creates unique habitats that certain plants and animals depend on. There are <b>sandbanks<\/b> that provide a home for rare beetle species, <b>steep sandy slopes<\/b> (called &#8220;nipor&#8221;) where sand martins nest, and <b>alder swamps<\/b>, as alder trees are better than most at withstanding long periods of flooding.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The <b>Svart\u00e4lven River<\/b> flows through the borderlands of Dalarna, V\u00e4rmland, and V\u00e4stmanland. Filipstad Municipality has classified the area as being of national interest for nature conservation, meaning it is considered important from an ecological perspective. The stretch of the river where our guests paddle is not part of a protected area, but there are <b>three nature reserves<\/b> nearby. These are mainly protected for their birdlife, and one of them also has a rare moss species. Log driving on the <b>Klar\u00e4lven River<\/b> was first mentioned in the 1730s and continued all the way until 1991, leaving behind traces of various log driving structures along the river.<\/p>\n<p>During the <b>Middle Ages<\/b>, a <b>pilgrimage route<\/b> ran through the Klar\u00e4lven Valley, guiding travelers on their way to <b>Nidaros<\/b>(modern-day Trondheim) in Norway. The churches in <b>Dalby, Norra Ny, and Eksh\u00e4rad<\/b> all house medieval artifacts. The area is also rich in history, with remains of <b>hunting pits, charcoal production sites, water-powered sawmills<\/b>, and more\u2014reminders of a time shaped by hard work and self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Svart\u00e4lven area<\/b> holds many traces from the <b>Stone Age<\/b>, including several discovered settlement sites. Finds such as <b>stone axes and tools<\/b> reveal early human activity in the region. The area also has a strong <b>mining and metalworking <\/b>history. Since the 1600s, iron production and ore extraction took place in <b>\u00c4lvsj\u00f6hyttan and Lesj\u00f6fors<\/b>. In <b>Gustavsstr\u00f6m<\/b>, a <b>blast furnace, forge hammer, and sawmill<\/b> operated in the mid-1700s.
