That might be a question one asks, but V\u00e4rmland has something special\u2014packed into a relatively small area.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-container block-core-paragraph\"><div class=\"block is-wp-block core-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the south, V\u00e4nern, Sweden\u2019s largest lake, stretches out. To the east, the iron-rich lands tell the story of a long industrial history. To the west, the borderland between Sweden and Norway, known as Finnskogen, was once home to Finnish settlers. In the north, the highest mountains offer breathtaking, far-reaching views. Water is abundant in V\u00e4rmland, with over 10,000 lakes and numerous rivers, covering nearly 20% of the region\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p>V\u00e4rmland is perhaps best known for its stunning natural landscapes, but it has also been home to world-renowned authors, inventors, musicians, and artists, both past and present.<\/p>\n<p>The region has a population of just under 300,000 people, with an average population density of fewer than 18 inhabitants per square kilometer (compared to 520 per km\u00b2 in the Netherlands). However, the population is unevenly distributed. Karlstad municipality accounts for about a third of the inhabitants, while the northern municipalities, such as Torsby and Hagfors, have seen a steady decline over the years. This depopulation was one of the reasons Vildmark i V\u00e4rmland was founded in 1980\u2014to attract more people to the area through nature tourism and wilderness experiences. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vildmark.se\/en\/good-to-know\/the-history-of-vildmark-i-varmland\/\">(See the history of Vildmark i V\u00e4rmland).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A historically significant group in V\u00e4rmland was the Forest Finns. In the late 1500s and early 1600s, many Finns, particularly from Savolax, migrated westward. A large number settled in northwestern V\u00e4rmland, where their cultural heritage remains visible today. This is evident in the many local heritage sites\/homestead museums (<i>hembygdsg\u00e5rdar<\/i>) that serve as a bridge between the past and the present. These sites help preserve and pass on the region\u2019s cultural heritage and history through various activities. In the summer, some of these heritage sites also offer a taste of V\u00e4rmland\u2019s traditional dish, <i>n\u00e4vgr\u00f6t<\/i>\u2014a porridge made from roasted and ground oats. This dish was introduced by the Forest Finns, and the oat flour (<i>skr\u00e4dmj\u00f6l<\/i>) used in it remains a key ingredient in many V\u00e4rmland recipes today.<\/p>\n<p>Culture has also been a fundamental part of life in V\u00e4rmland. Alongside numerous galleries, museums, theaters, and studios, several well-known figures have connections to the region. Selma Lagerl\u00f6f, from M\u00e5rbacka near Sunne, was the first woman and the first Swede to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909. The poet and writer Gustaf Fr\u00f6ding, whose many poems have been set to music, is another beloved literary figure. In the same field, V\u00e4rmland has also been home to poet Nils Ferlin and writer, poet, and composer Erik Gustaf Geijer.<\/p>\n<p>The region has also produced famous artists in other fields. Tourism, a relatively new industry in V\u00e4rmland, has grown significantly from the late 20th century to today. Both winter and summer tourism are well established here, and the number of registered overnight stays per resident has consistently been above the national average for many years. V\u00e4rmland attracts visitors from all over Sweden as well as from other countries.<\/p>\n<p>However, most jobs in V\u00e4rmland are still found in industries such as manufacturing, trade, construction, education, healthcare, and social services. Several major industrial companies operate here, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Uddeholm<\/b> in Hagfors, which produces tool steel for industrial use<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Valmet<\/b> in Karlstad, specializing in equipment for pulp production<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Outokumpu<\/b> in Degerfors, a stainless steel manufacturer<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Wasa Kn\u00e4ckebr\u00f6d<\/b> in Filipstad, home to the company\u2019s largest production facility<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Billerud<\/b> in Grums, a leading producer of packaging materials<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>L\u00f6fbergs<\/b> in Karlstad, a well-known coffee producer<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Stora Enso<\/b>, which manufactures wood-based products such as paper and cardboard on Hammar\u00f6<\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Tetra Pak<\/b> in Sunne, which produces food packaging<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When Tetra Pak\u2019s management was considering where to establish their operations, they toured V\u00e4rmland. The Vice President is said to have remarked, <i>\u201cLook out over Lake Fryken, and you\u2019ll understand why Sunne is the perfect place for us.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Nature is one of V\u00e4rmland\u2019s greatest assets\u2014across all industries. An impressive 83% of V\u00e4rmland\u2019s land area is covered by forests (compared to 68% for Sweden as a whole).<\/p>\n<p>The region is also home to 238 nature reserves, each offering unique and diverse nature experiences.<\/p>\n<p>A vast network of countless kilometers of cycling trails, hiking paths, and ski tracks stretches across the entire region. In winter, you can hit the slopes at Bran\u00e4sberget and Hovfj\u00e4llet, while those eager to ski in the middle of summer can visit the ski tunnel in Torsby. From Granberget, V\u00e4rmland\u2019s highest peak (700.5 meters above sea level), you\u2019ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>One rapid remains in the Klar\u00e4lven River\u2014Str\u00e4ngsforsen\u2014though no organized activities take place there anymore.
